Thoughts on Salvation
This question of 'what is salvation?' has been something I have thought about for decades. I didn't really know anything about salvation until I was at a church service that my sister had asked me to attend. At the end of the service, the teacher encouraged anyone who wanted to be saved to come forward to the altar. As I considered what he was asking, something deep within me brought to mind all of my past sins and I felt the weight of those sins upon me. I felt drawn to walk forward and immediately started walking toward the altar at the prompting by my sister. As I was walking I started weeping as I was confronted by the darkness of my sinfulness. I knelt at the altar and suddenly felt the weight of my sins being removed at once. The heavy burden that I was feeling was instantly gone and replaced with an immense peace that flooded my entire being. At that time, I knew that God was real and what had happened to me was genuine - God's salvation! However, I didn't understand what that meant for the remainder of my life. Most of the churches that I have attended since then taught that salvation is a single point in time - when a person first believes in Jesus as his Lord and Savior. Some taught that you receive salvation when you are baptized in water by a church official while others taught that it had to be a decision that you personally made to accept Jesus as your savior.
More questions arose in me when I started reading through the Bible every year. I encountered passages that addressed or alluded to the loss of salvation or referred to salvation in the present or future tense for believers. I found salvation being expressed in three contexts: past, present and future. We were saved, we are being saved, we will be saved. In contrast, teachers that I heard taught that salvation is the moment of belief or baptism and that once you have received salvation that you are eternally secure i.e. there is no way that you can lose your salvation. I've heard this described as 'once saved, always saved'.

When a ‘believer’ renounces their faith or lives a lifestyle contrary to the teachings of the life Christ has called us to, some conclude that the person never had a salvation moment and wasn’t really a believer. Others maintain their eternal salvation remains secure no matter what they do or will do. I don’t recall any teachings about an ongoing salvation or of a salvation to come. So I wondered why were these passages written and translated in a manner contrary to the prevalent message being taught?
The passage of scripture that served as a catalyst to unlock my understanding of salvation is 1 Corinthians 10. This passage points the New Testament believer to the Old Testament exodus of the Israelites. In particular, verse 11 states, “these things happened to them as an example, and they were written for our instruction, upon whom the ends of the ages have come” (1 Corinthians 10:11). Since this is an example for us and was written for our instruction, let's see what we can learn from the Israelites and how their experience parallels the life of the believer.
The Israelites were the descendants of Abraham through his son Isaac. They moved to Egypt during a famine. At the time, Joseph oversaw the affairs of the nation of Egypt as the Lord orchestrated his rise to power and to his reuniting with his father and brothers and their families. But following Joseph's death, the Israelites came under the harsh rule and forced labor of a new Pharaoh (Exodus 1).
What they didn't understand was their captivity and affliction was God's timing for the fulfillment of His promise to their ancestor Abraham that He made many years prior (Genesis 15:12-16). God extended His mercy towards the Israelites by rescuing them from Egypt and moving them to the land that He promised to Abraham. The Israelites didn't do anything to warrant God's favor to rescue them. In their bondage, they cried out to God for help and He saved them from their captivity through His servant Moses.
Similarly, a time of grace has been extended to us through Jesus. If we cry out, repent, and in faith believe, we become adopted children and receive a better promise through faith in Jesus as Lord and Savior (1 Peter 2:9-10). Our salvation also comes unwarranted and unexpected and rescues us from the hold of an enemy (Ephesians 2). Pharaoh and the Egyptians were the Israelites' enemy and captor and they enslaved the Israelites. Satan is our enemy and captor (2 Timothy 2:26) and we are slaves to sin (Romans 6:16-18). He uses the rulers, powers, world forces of darkness, and spiritual forces of wickedness (Ephesians 6:12) to make war against those who keep the Lord's commandments and hold to Jesus' testimony (Revelation 12:17).
What this means is that we don't live in a passive or neutral environment (Acts 26:16-18). Rather, the world is our Egypt and it is a hostile environment where the enemy has been granted time to rule (Revelation 12). Satan holds us as slaves to the desires of our flesh and mind (Ephesians 2:1-3). He can subject those who fear death into slavery their entire life (Hebrews 2:14-15). However, he is not all powerful and only acts under the Lord's authority (Job 1:6-13). But make no mistake about his intent, Satan is here to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10). There is no hope for freedom except through Jesus, the Savior of the world. This is why Jesus said that He did not come to bring peace, but a sword (Matthew 10:34).
Being set free through salvation we move forward in both flesh and Spirit. The Spirit is given to the believer through the baptism that Jesus foretold in John 14. It is not water baptism, which is a baptism of repentance, but the promised baptism of the Holy Spirit first fulfilled in Acts 2 (Matthew 3:11). John the Baptist makes a contrast of his baptism - water and repentance - with the baptism of Jesus - Holy Spirit and fire (Luke 3:16). Jesus stated the Spirit (the Helper) will not only abide with you but be in you (John 14:16-17). Consider that - the God who created the universe abiding in you - amazing! Many will say you receive the Spirit when you first believe, but scripture shows accounts where this isn't so (Acts 8:14-17, Acts 19:2-6).
Salvation and the baptism of the Holy Spirit came to me as two separate moments. Shortly after I had felt the joy of His salvation, some people gathered around me and laid their hands on me. Suddenly, it felt like the ceiling was opened and God was pouring through and filling my inner being. The feeling was that of intense love, joy and peace of which I've never felt before or since. It was so intense I had to ask for it to stop as I didn't think I could handle any more. I hadn't read the Bible or heard of the Holy Spirit or what happened in Acts but surely this was His baptism of the Holy Spirit (Acts 8:14-17). He said He will make His abode with us (John 14:23). Now in us, the Spirit bears its fruit in our lives and gives gifts to perfect and build the body (Romans 12, 1 Corinthians 12, Ephesians 4).
As I reflect on my salvation, an awe comes over me as I rejoice in my freedom. I more fully grasp the captivity that the world is under and of which I was once held captive. Moreover, I understand how the ruler who held me in bondage no longer has a hold on me (Romans 8:2). The Israelites crossing of the Red Sea and the drowning of Pharaoh offers an illustration to us of our death and new birth - of what genuinely happens when we are saved. The Lord saves us from the enemy and our former bonds (Luke 4:18-19). That is truly good news!
For many, an initial salvation moment is all there is to salvation. Having a salvation moment is what many people look to when they try to determine if someone is saved. Did you have a salvation moment? If yours wasn't moving or dramatic, does that mean you aren't saved? If you weren't baptized by a church official, are you not saved? For young people who were raised in the church, most can't recall if they ever had a salvation moment. Some were baptized or christened as infants. Some remember always believing because their parents believed. This is how the Israelites were saved as well. Some were young children, some even within the womb of their mothers. Others witnessed the miracles and chose to believe in God and follow Moses. But indeed, all who believed and left with Moses were saved from Pharaoh and the Egyptians.
Perhaps our error in thinking about salvation is to consider it to only be an initial moment. Salvation is an ongoing relationship with Jesus - an ongoing belief that He is our Lord and Savior. Just as God didn't abandon the Israelites after they passed through the Red Sea, neither does He abandon us. He led them across the wilderness, provided them with water to drink and food to eat. He protected them from serpents and kept their clothing and shoes from wearing out. He overthrew armies and kingdoms and provided them with a new land. He continues to save us as we walk with Him and are sanctified by the Holy Spirit.
An illustration of our initial and ongoing salvation is Jesus' message of the great cost of salvation through His flesh and blood. He tells us that in order to have life we must eat His flesh and drink His blood. He then expands this message four more times but changes the word 'eat' to 'feeds'. 'Feeds' implies a longer, ongoing process of eating. It literally means to gnaw. He says in order to have eternal life we must gnaw on His flesh and drink His blood. And He elaborates on gnawing two more times. The gnawing and the repetition speaks to the ongoing relationship that He is calling us to have with Him.
John 6:53-58
In wedding parlance, the initial salvation moment is the betrothal, our time of salvation on earth is the preparation for the wedding, and the salvation to eternal life is the wedding ceremony to come.
Despite salvation, our flesh continues on - perishable, natural, earthy but to be raised imperishable (1 Corinthians 15:42-58). It is like grass that withers and whose flower falls off (1 Peter 1:24). The reason why we continue to struggle against sin is because our flesh is evil - its members serve the law of sin (Romans 7:14-25). It remembers what it enjoyed in Egypt and urges us to go back (Numbers 11:4-6). It is never satisfied and it asks for more (Ephesians 2:3).
The Spirit, though, helps our weaknesses, intercedes for us and searches our hearts (Romans 8:26-27). He teaches us all things and brings remembrance of what Jesus says (John 14:26). He sets Himself against the flesh so that you don't do what your flesh desires (Galatians 5:16-17). He empowers us to fulfill the work of the Savior and to perform 'greater works than these' (John 14:12). He distributes His gifts among the believers to build up each other as one body and to make it a holy and pure Bride (Revelation 19:7-8).
Jesus became flesh and lived among men (John 1:14). He emptied Himself, took on the form of man, and humbled himself, and walked in obedience (Philippians 2:7-8). Like us, He was tempted in all things so that He could sympathize with our weaknesses (Hebrews 4:14-15) and can aid those who are tempted (Hebrews 2:18). To show us the way, the Spirit led Jesus into a wilderness following His baptism. After 40 days, scripture describes the final encounter between Jesus and Satan in the wilderness as Satan came to tempt Him. Jesus resists the temptation from Satan illuminating the path for us all to follow. The Spirit gave Jesus remembrance of the truths He would need to resist the temptation to his flesh. Satan appealed to His hunger, to His trust, and to His will. Jesus resisted the devil and he left Him (Matthew 4:1-11).
God will place us in a wilderness to test us and to see what is in our heart just as He did with Jesus and the Israelites (1 Peter 4:12-13). We shouldn't look at the testing as though God is waiting for us to fail. He promises we will not be tested beyond what we are able to handle (1 Corinthians 10:13). He allows trials in our lives to produce endurance so we will be perfect and complete (James 1:2-5). The afflictions we face bring comfort and salvation (2 Corinthians 1:5-6). And He refines us like gold - exposing, separating and then removing the impurities if we will allow the Spirit to do the work (1 Peter 1:3-9). As we love God, the deeds of the flesh are put to death (Romans 8:13). Our flesh has been crucified with Christ and we now live by faith in the flesh so that Christ lives in us (Galatians 2:20). The result of the ongoing work of the Spirit is sanctification - purification (Romans 6:19-22).
Can a believer lose salvation? Paul writes that we have been established in Christ, anointed by God, sealed and given the Spirit as a pledge (2 Corinthians 1:21-22). He further writes that having believed in the gospel of salvation, we are sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit given as a pledge of our inheritance (Ephesians 1:13). These passages seem to imply that you can't - that your salvation is sealed.
But looking back to 1 Corinthians 10, Paul writes, 'For I do not want you to be unaware, brethren, that our fathers were all under the cloud and all passed through the sea; and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea; and all ate the same spiritual food; and all drank the same spiritual drink, for they were drinking from a spiritual rock which followed them; and the rock was Christ. Nevertheless, with most of them God was not well-pleased; for they were laid low in the wilderness.'
Paul then lists moments when many Israelites failed to follow the Lord and were destroyed by Him. And he concludes the section by saying, 'Now these things happened to them as an example, and they were written for our instruction, upon whom the ends of the ages have come. Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed that he does not fall.'
Salvation does not mean that God will keep us from turning back to our flesh. In other words, salvation doesn't remove our free will. We can observe the Israelites to see this - salvation from Egypt did not remove their propensity to sin. Even though they witnessed the powerful hand of God perform miracles, rescue them from captivity, part the Red Sea and destroy their captors, they quickly turned away and practiced idolatry, were immoral, tried the Lord, and grumbled (1 Corinthians 10:7-10). And this is what Paul is pointing out as a warning to us. Likewise, if we love ourselves and serve the flesh, we forsake the Spirit and are in danger of falling away (Hebrews 3:7-19). This is because the flesh can be lured back to the former deeds of sinfulness (Romans 7:14-25). Without the Spirit's help, we are helpless to overcome the flesh (Romans 8:6-8).
Does this mean that once we are saved, committing a sin will disqualify us from eternal salvation? It is not just any sin that will disqualify us but rather the absence of the Holy Spirit from within us. Jesus spoke of it as blasphemy of the Spirit:
Paul speaks about it by telling us that our body is God's temple where the Holy Spirit dwells:
What is the blasphemy of the Holy Spirit? And how can one destroy the temple of God? Romans 8 perhaps answers this most succinctly:
Here we see Paul contrast those who walk according to their flesh and those who walk according to the Spirit. You could argue that he is speaking about people who are saved versus unsaved in the first part of this chapter. However, Paul directly says this is for those 'who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit'. He later leads with, 'So then brothers…', showing that this is for the believer. He writes this warning within that context, 'For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live'. Walking according to the flesh results in spiritual death - the loss of the Spirit within us. Without His Spirit, we are no longer in Christ Jesus who covers us from condemnation.
So can someone really lose the Holy Spirit since it was given by grace while we were still sinners? Let's remember that salvation is only possible because a new covenant was made by God. Hebrews tells us that a covenant requires a death to be in force and that without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness. The covenant with the Israelites was made through the death and shed blood of bulls and goats and was repeated again and again. But the new covenant was done once for all time. Therefore, it couldn't be just any blood but the blood that came from a perfect sacrifice - Jesus (Hebrews 9:15-22).
It is by grace that we are saved and enter into this covenant. By believing in Jesus and repenting of our sins, we are born spiritually into this new covenant and await the salvation of our souls. Being sealed then is His promise and His assurance of an eternal salvation. He gives the Holy Spirit to be in us as His pledge. But it isn't without cost or obligation (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). A covenant is an agreement in which we become debtors to Him (Romans 8:12). If we receive His grace but continue to walk according to the flesh, we trample underfoot the Son of God, and profane the blood of the covenant by which we were sanctified, and outrage the Spirit of grace (Hebrews 10:29). We repeat the sin of Adam who died spiritually and was cast from His presence. We repeat the sin of the Israelites who were saved and yet fell in the wilderness.
Looking again to the Israelites, we read of them turning away from the Lord, walking according to their flesh, and turning to other gods. We can read their record through the Old Testament to observe their falling away and hear God's displeasure and longing for their devotion. But two moments with the Israelites are telling regarding the loss of His Spirit: the Lord's departure from the tabernacle in Shiloh and His departure from the temple in Jerusalem.
In Shiloh, Hophni and Phinehas were serving as priests in the Lord's tabernacle. They were the sons of Eli the High Priest. And they were evil (1 Samuel 2:12-36). They did not follow the law concerning the offering of the Lord but would illegally take the best portions of meat including the portions that were dedicated to the Lord for themselves. And they openly slept with women who came to the tabernacle defiling the Lord's name. When the Lord summoned the Philistines for battle against the Israelites, Hophni and Phinehas thought they could bring the Lord's presence into battle to defeat the Philistines. Instead, both Hophni and Phinehas are killed in battle and the Lord allows the Ark of the Covenant to be captured. The Lord forsakes the Israelites and His dwelling in Shiloh. Because of the Lord's departure, Eli, the High Priest, fell over and died upon hearing the news. His son's wife named her child, Ichabod, as she heard the news, delivered the baby and died. Ichabod translated means, 'the glory has departed' (1 Samuel 4). The psalmist recalls the moment:
In the succession of kings in Jerusalem, Manasseh became king and led Israel far from the covenant of the Lord (2 Kings 21). He erected altars to Baal, an Asherah, and altars to the host of heaven and worshiped and served them. He also built altars to the host of heaven and an Asherah in the Lord's temple. He sacrificed his sons and brought fortune telling, omens and necromancers and he shed much innocent blood. Because of his great sin, the Lord says, "And I will forsake the remnant of my heritage and give them into the hand of their enemies, and they shall become a prey and a spoil to all their enemies, because they have done what is evil in my sight and have provoked me to anger, since the day their fathers came out of Egypt, even to this day." (2 Kings 21:15-16). In Ezekiel we read about the departure of the Lord from His temple (Ezekiel 10-11). Later in the book, Ezekiel records:
These moments are important to the New Testament believer because they show the Lord departing from His temple when the temple is defiled with other gods and idols and practices that are an abomination to Him.
Let's take the example of sexual immorality to understand this. If we are saved, our body has become a temple of the Holy Spirit. When we are sexually immoral, we sin against our own body. Because of the mystery of one flesh in marriage, we become one flesh with those whom we join ourselves to sexually (1 Corinthians 3:12-20). Listen to what is written to the Corinthians:
Notice how Paul, when addressing a relationship between a believer and unbeliever, changes the focus to the spiritual aspect of what this really means. He writes of how this relationship brings the enemy and idols into the Lord's dwelling - His temple. This is what blasphemes the Holy Spirit. This is what destroys His temple. This is the deceitfulness of sin. This is why the enemy so often tries to deceive people to walk away from His truth. Listen to the writer of Hebrews:
One may ask, "How many sins do I have to commit before the Holy Spirit leaves?" Or, "What sins are considered an abomination that are a blasphemy of the Holy Spirit?" You are mistaken for even thinking this way! It would be like a married person asking their spouse, "How many times can I have sex with others before you leave me?" Or, "How many hateful things can I do to you before our marriage is destroyed?" No! If we truly love Him, we will seek Him, learn what He loves, and look for ways to serve and honor Him. We will spend time building our relationship with Him. Remember - he gives His Holy Spirit as our Helper.
If we truly believe, there will be fruit from His Spirit and a change of course away from the world and from the desires of our flesh. We know we are walking in salvation because the Spirit will bear love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control in us. Furthermore, the Spirit will guide and help us to put to death the works of our flesh - immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these (Galatians 5:17-24).
This means to walk in salvation is to be led by the Spirit within us. As we set aside our own desires to pursue His, we are led to walk according to the Spirit in obedience of faith in word and deed (Romans 15:18). His power provides us everything for life and godliness (2 Peter 1:3). As a result, He bears fruit in us that leads to sanctification (Romans 6:22). Being led by the Spirit proves that our faith is real through our obedience to the Spirit in works (James 2:18-26). Which leads us to faith!
Faith guards our salvation through the power of God (1 Peter 1:3-5). Faith casts off the works of darkness and puts on the armor of light (Romans 13:11). It extinguishes all the flaming arrows of the evil one (Ephesians 5:16). It preserves our souls (Hebrews 10:36). Like Abraham, whose faith was counted to him as righteousness, our faith is counted to us who believe God raised Jesus from the dead and was delivered up for our transgressions and raised for our justification (Romans 4:22-25).
The following verses are just some of the many that I collected while reading through the ESV and NASB translations of the Bible the last two years regarding salvation.
Romans 3:21-31
For the promise to Abraham and his offspring that he would be heir of the world did not come through the law but through the righteousness of faith. For if it is the adherents of the law who are to be the heirs, faith is null and the promise is void. For the law brings wrath, but where there is no law there is no transgression. That is why it depends on faith, in order that the promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed to all his offspring—not only to the adherent of the law but also to the one who shares the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all, as it is written, "I have made you the father of many nations"—in the presence of the God in whom he believed, who gives life to the dead and calls into existence the things that do not exist. In hope he believed against hope, that he should become the father of many nations, as he had been told, "So shall your offspring be." He did not weaken in faith when he considered his own body, which was as good as dead (since he was about a hundred years old), or when he considered the barrenness of Sarah's womb. No unbelief made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised. That is why his faith was "counted to him as righteousness." But the words "it was counted to him" were not written for his sake alone, but for ours also. It will be counted to us who believe in him who raised from the dead Jesus our Lord, who was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification.
Romans 4:13-25
Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us. For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation. Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned— for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no law.
Romans 5:1-13
But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man's trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many. And the free gift is not like the result of that one man's sin. For the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brought justification. For if, because of one man's trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ. Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men. For as by the one man's disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man's obedience the many will be made righteous. Now the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Romans 5:15-21
I am speaking in human terms, because of your natural limitations. For just as you once presented your members as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness leading to sanctification. For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. But what fruit were you getting at that time from the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death. But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 6:19-23
For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, "Abba! Father!" The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.
Romans 8:15-17
But what does it say? "The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart" (that is, the word of faith that we proclaim); because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. For the Scripture says, "Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame." For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him. For "everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved."
Romans 10:8-13
But if some of the branches were broken off, and you, although a wild olive shoot, were grafted in among the others and now share in the nourishing root of the olive tree, do not be arrogant toward the branches. If you are, remember it is not you who support the root, but the root that supports you. Then you will say, "Branches were broken off so that I might be grafted in." That is true. They were broken off because of their unbelief, but you stand fast through faith. So do not become proud, but fear. For if God did not spare the natural branches, neither will he spare you. Note then the kindness and the severity of God: severity toward those who have fallen, but God's kindness to you, provided you continue in his kindness. Otherwise you too will be cut off. And even they, if they do not continue in their unbelief, will be grafted in, for God has the power to graft them in again. For if you were cut from what is by nature a wild olive tree, and grafted, contrary to nature, into a cultivated olive tree, how much more will these, the natural branches, be grafted back into their own olive tree.
Romans 11:17-24

The coming of the lawless one is by the activity of Satan with all power and false signs and wonders, and with all wicked deception for those who are perishing, because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. Therefore God sends them a strong delusion, so that they may believe what is false, in order that all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

Therefore do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward. For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God you may receive what is promised. For, "Yet a little while, and the coming one will come and will not delay; but my righteous one shall live by faith, and if he shrinks back, my soul has no pleasure in him." But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who have faith and preserve their souls.

And the great dragon was thrown down, the serpent of old who is called the devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him. Then I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, “Now the salvation, and the power, and the kingdom of our God and the authority of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren has been thrown down, he who accuses them before our God day and night. And they overcame him because of the blood of the Lamb and because of the word of their testimony, and they did not love their life even when faced with death. For this reason, rejoice, O heavens and you who dwell in them. Woe to the earth and the sea, because the devil has come down to you, having great wrath, knowing that he has only a short time.” And when the dragon saw that he was thrown down to the earth, he persecuted the woman who gave birth to the male child. But the two wings of the great eagle were given to the woman, so that she could fly into the wilderness to her place, where she was nourished for a time and times and half a time, from the presence of the serpent. And the serpent poured water like a river out of his mouth after the woman, so that he might cause her to be swept away with the flood. But the earth helped the woman, and the earth opened its mouth and drank up the river which the dragon poured out of his mouth. So the dragon was enraged with the woman, and went off to make war with the rest of her children, who keep the commandments of God and hold to the testimony of Jesus.

Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, holding the key of the abyss and a great chain in his hand. And he laid hold of the dragon, the serpent of old, who is the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years; and he threw him into the abyss, and shut it and sealed it over him, so that he would not deceive the nations any longer, until the thousand years were completed; after these things he must be released for a short time. Then I saw thrones, and they sat on them, and judgment was given to them. And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded because of their testimony of Jesus and because of the word of God, and those who had not worshiped the beast or his image, and had not received the mark on their forehead and on their hand; and they came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years. The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were completed. This is the first resurrection. Blessed and holy is the one who has a part in the first resurrection; over these the second death has no power, but they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with Him for a thousand years. When the thousand years are completed, Satan will be released from his prison, and will come out to deceive the nations which are in the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together for the war; the number of them is like the sand of the seashore. And they came up on the broad plain of the earth and surrounded the camp of the saints and the beloved city, and fire came down from heaven and devoured them. And the devil who deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are also; and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever. Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat upon it, from whose presence earth and heaven fled away, and no place was found for them. And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and books were opened; and another book was opened, which is the book of life; and the dead were judged from the things which were written in the books, according to their deeds. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead which were in them; and they were judged, every one of them according to their deeds. Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

The king was angry, and he sent his troops and destroyed those murderers and burned their city. Then he said to his servants, 'The wedding feast is ready, but those invited were not worthy. Go therefore to the main roads and invite to the wedding feast as many as you find.' And those servants went out into the roads and gathered all whom they found, both bad and good. So the wedding hall was filled with guests. "But when the king came in to look at the guests, he saw there a man who had no wedding garment. And he said to him, 'Friend, how did you get in here without a wedding garment?' And he was speechless. Then the king said to the attendants, 'Bind him hand and foot and cast him into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.' For many are called, but few are chosen."
Matthew 22:1-14
"Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and put you to death, and you will be hated by all nations for my name's sake. And then many will fall away and betray one another and hate one another. And many false prophets will arise and lead many astray. And because lawlessness will be increased, the love of many will grow cold. But the one who endures to the end will be saved. And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.
Matthew 24:9-14
For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been from the beginning of the world until now, no, and never will be. And if those days had not been cut short, no human being would be saved. But for the sake of the elect those days will be cut short. Then if anyone says to you, 'Look, here is the Christ!' or 'There he is!' do not believe it. For false christs and false prophets will arise and perform great signs and wonders, so as to lead astray, if possible, even the elect. See, I have told you beforehand. So, if they say to you, 'Look, he is in the wilderness,' do not go out. If they say, 'Look, he is in the inner rooms,' do not believe it. For as the lightning comes from the east and shines as far as the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. Wherever the corpse is, there the vultures will gather.
Matthew 24:21-28
"Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom his master has set over his household, to give them their food at the proper time? Blessed is that servant whom his master will find so doing when he comes. Truly, I say to you, he will set him over all his possessions. But if that wicked servant says to himself, 'My master is delayed,' and begins to beat his fellow servants and eats and drinks with drunkards, the master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he does not know and will cut him in pieces and put him with the hypocrites. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Matthew 24:45-51
"Then the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. Afterward the other virgins came also, saying, 'Lord, Lord, open to us.' But he answered, 'Truly, I say to you, I do not know you.' Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour.

Here, you have what is yours.' But his master answered him, 'You wicked and slothful servant! You knew that I reap where I have not sown and gather where I scattered no seed? Then you ought to have invested my money with the bankers, and at my coming I should have received what was my own with interest. So take the talent from him and give it to him who has the ten talents. For to everyone who has will more be given, and he will have an abundance. But from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. And cast the worthless servant into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.'
Matthew 25:14-30
And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them, "If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it. For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul? For what can a man give in return for his soul? For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels."

And people will come from east and west, and from north and south, and recline at table in the kingdom of God. And behold, some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last."
Luke 13:23-30
"If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple. For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it? Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, saying, 'This man began to build and was not able to finish.' Or what king, going out to encounter another king in war, will not sit down first and deliberate whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand? And if not, while the other is yet a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks for terms of peace. So therefore, any one of you who does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple. "Salt is good, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is of no use either for the soil or for the manure pile. It is thrown away. He who has ears to hear, let him hear."

And he said to him, 'And you are to be over five cities.' Then another came, saying, 'Lord, here is your mina, which I kept laid away in a handkerchief; for I was afraid of you, because you are a severe man. You take what you did not deposit, and reap what you did not sow.' He said to him, 'I will condemn you with your own words, you wicked servant! You knew that I was a severe man, taking what I did not deposit and reaping what I did not sow? Why then did you not put my money in the bank, and at my coming I might have collected it with interest?' And he said to those who stood by, 'Take the mina from him, and give it to the one who has the ten minas.' And they said to him, 'Lord, he has ten minas!' 'I tell you that to everyone who has, more will be given, but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. But as for these enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here and slaughter them before me.'"
Luke 19:12-27
But the other answered, and rebuking him said, "Do you not even fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? And we indeed are suffering justly, for we are receiving what we deserve for our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong." And he was saying, "Jesus, remember me when You come in Your kingdom!" Therefore choose life, that you and your offspring may live, loving the Lord your God, obeying his voice and holding fast to him, for he is your life and length of days, that you may dwell in the land that the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them."
Deuteronomy 30:11-20
On the next day Moses said to the people, “You yourselves have committed a great sin; and now I am going up to the Lord , perhaps I can make atonement for your sin.” Then Moses returned to the Lord , and said, “Alas, this people has committed a great sin, and they have made a god of gold for themselves. But go now, lead the people where I told you. Behold, My angel shall go before you; nevertheless in the day when I punish, I will punish them for their sin.”Exodus 32:30-34
Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord ? And who shall stand in his holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to what is false and does not swear deceitfully. He will receive blessing from the Lord and righteousness from the God of his salvation.

In the sight of their fathers he performed wonders in the land of Egypt, in the fields of Zoan. He divided the sea and let them pass through it, and made the waters stand like a heap. But before they had satisfied their craving, while the food was still in their mouths, the anger of God rose against them, and he killed the strongest of them and laid low the young men of Israel. In spite of all this, they still sinned; despite his wonders, they did not believe. So he made their days vanish like a breath, and their years in terror. When he killed them, they sought him; they repented and sought God earnestly. They remembered that God was their rock, the Most High God their redeemer. But they flattered him with their mouths; they lied to him with their tongues. Their heart was not steadfast toward him; they were not faithful to his covenant. Yet he, being compassionate, atoned for their iniquity and did not destroy them; he restrained his anger often and did not stir up all his wrath. He remembered that they were but flesh, a wind that passes and comes not again. How often they rebelled against him in the wilderness and grieved him in the desert! They tested God again and again and provoked the Holy One of Israel. They did not remember his power or the day when he redeemed them from the foe, when he performed his signs in Egypt and his marvels in the fields of Zoan. He turned their rivers to blood, so that they could not drink of their streams. He sent among them swarms of flies, which devoured them, and frogs, which destroyed them. He gave their crops to the destroying locust and the fruit of their labor to the locust. He destroyed their vines with hail and their sycamores with frost. He gave over their cattle to the hail and their flocks to thunderbolts. He let loose on them his burning anger, wrath, indignation, and distress, a company of destroying angels. He made a path for his anger; he did not spare them from death, but gave their lives over to the plague. He struck down every firstborn in Egypt, the firstfruits of their strength in the tents of Ham. Then he led out his people like sheep and guided them in the wilderness like a flock. He led them in safety, so that they were not afraid, but the sea overwhelmed their enemies. And he brought them to his holy land, to the mountain which his right hand had won. He drove out nations before them; he apportioned them for a possession and settled the tribes of Israel in their tents. Yet they tested and rebelled against the Most High God and did not keep his testimonies, but turned away and acted treacherously like their fathers; they twisted like a deceitful bow. For they provoked him to anger with their high places; they moved him to jealousy with their idols. When God heard, he was full of wrath, and he utterly rejected Israel. He forsook his dwelling at Shiloh, the tent where he dwelt among mankind, and delivered his power to captivity, his glory to the hand of the foe. He gave his people over to the sword and vented his wrath on his heritage. Fire devoured their young men, and their young women had no marriage song. Their priests fell by the sword, and their widows made no lamentation. Then the Lord awoke as from sleep, like a strong man shouting because of wine. And he put his adversaries to rout; he put them to everlasting shame. He rejected the tent of Joseph; he did not choose the tribe of Ephraim, but he chose the tribe of Judah, Mount Zion, which he loves. He built his sanctuary like the high heavens, like the earth, which he has founded forever.

Moreover, I gave them my Sabbaths, as a sign between me and them, that they might know that I am the Lord who sanctifies them. But the house of Israel rebelled against me in the wilderness. They did not walk in my statutes but rejected my rules, by which, if a person does them, he shall live; and my Sabbaths they greatly profaned. But I withheld my hand and acted for the sake of my name, that it should not be profaned in the sight of the nations, in whose sight I had brought them out. Moreover, I swore to them in the wilderness that I would scatter them among the nations and disperse them through the countries, because they had not obeyed my rules, but had rejected my statutes and profaned my Sabbaths, and their eyes were set on their fathers' idols. Moreover, I gave them statutes that were not good and rules by which they could not have life, and I defiled them through their very gifts in their offering up all their firstborn, that I might devastate them. I did it that they might know that I am the Lord . "Therefore, son of man, speak to the house of Israel and say to them, Thus says the Lord God : In this also your fathers blasphemed me, by dealing treacherously with me. For when I had brought them into the land that I swore to give them, then wherever they saw any high hill or any leafy tree, there they offered their sacrifices and there they presented the provocation of their offering; there they sent up their pleasing aromas, and there they poured out their drink offerings. (I said to them, 'What is the high place to which you go?' So its name is called Bamah to this day.) "Therefore say to the house of Israel, Thus says the Lord God : Will you defile yourselves after the manner of your fathers and go whoring after their detestable things? When you present your gifts and offer up your children in fire, you defile yourselves with all your idols to this day. And shall I be inquired of by you, O house of Israel? As I live, declares the Lord God, I will not be inquired of by you. "What is in your mind shall never happen—the thought, 'Let us be like the nations, like the tribes of the countries, and worship wood and stone.' "As I live, declares the Lord God, surely with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm and with wrath poured out I will be king over you. I will bring you out from the peoples and gather you out of the countries where you are scattered, with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, and with wrath poured out. And I will bring you into the wilderness of the peoples, and there I will enter into judgment with you face to face. As I entered into judgment with your fathers in the wilderness of the land of Egypt, so I will enter into judgment with you, declares the Lord God. I will make you pass under the rod, and I will bring you into the bond of the covenant. I will purge out the rebels from among you, and those who transgress against me. I will bring them out of the land where they sojourn, but they shall not enter the land of Israel. Then you will know that I am the Lord.

An example for our instruction
The passage of scripture that served as a catalyst to unlock my understanding of salvation is 1 Corinthians 10. This passage points the New Testament believer to the Old Testament exodus of the Israelites. In particular, verse 11 states, “these things happened to them as an example, and they were written for our instruction, upon whom the ends of the ages have come” (1 Corinthians 10:11). Since this is an example for us and was written for our instruction, let's see what we can learn from the Israelites and how their experience parallels the life of the believer.
The Israelites were the descendants of Abraham through his son Isaac. They moved to Egypt during a famine. At the time, Joseph oversaw the affairs of the nation of Egypt as the Lord orchestrated his rise to power and to his reuniting with his father and brothers and their families. But following Joseph's death, the Israelites came under the harsh rule and forced labor of a new Pharaoh (Exodus 1).
What they didn't understand was their captivity and affliction was God's timing for the fulfillment of His promise to their ancestor Abraham that He made many years prior (Genesis 15:12-16). God extended His mercy towards the Israelites by rescuing them from Egypt and moving them to the land that He promised to Abraham. The Israelites didn't do anything to warrant God's favor to rescue them. In their bondage, they cried out to God for help and He saved them from their captivity through His servant Moses.
Similarly, a time of grace has been extended to us through Jesus. If we cry out, repent, and in faith believe, we become adopted children and receive a better promise through faith in Jesus as Lord and Savior (1 Peter 2:9-10). Our salvation also comes unwarranted and unexpected and rescues us from the hold of an enemy (Ephesians 2). Pharaoh and the Egyptians were the Israelites' enemy and captor and they enslaved the Israelites. Satan is our enemy and captor (2 Timothy 2:26) and we are slaves to sin (Romans 6:16-18). He uses the rulers, powers, world forces of darkness, and spiritual forces of wickedness (Ephesians 6:12) to make war against those who keep the Lord's commandments and hold to Jesus' testimony (Revelation 12:17).
What this means is that we don't live in a passive or neutral environment (Acts 26:16-18). Rather, the world is our Egypt and it is a hostile environment where the enemy has been granted time to rule (Revelation 12). Satan holds us as slaves to the desires of our flesh and mind (Ephesians 2:1-3). He can subject those who fear death into slavery their entire life (Hebrews 2:14-15). However, he is not all powerful and only acts under the Lord's authority (Job 1:6-13). But make no mistake about his intent, Satan is here to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10). There is no hope for freedom except through Jesus, the Savior of the world. This is why Jesus said that He did not come to bring peace, but a sword (Matthew 10:34).
The Holy Spirit our Helper
Being set free through salvation we move forward in both flesh and Spirit. The Spirit is given to the believer through the baptism that Jesus foretold in John 14. It is not water baptism, which is a baptism of repentance, but the promised baptism of the Holy Spirit first fulfilled in Acts 2 (Matthew 3:11). John the Baptist makes a contrast of his baptism - water and repentance - with the baptism of Jesus - Holy Spirit and fire (Luke 3:16). Jesus stated the Spirit (the Helper) will not only abide with you but be in you (John 14:16-17). Consider that - the God who created the universe abiding in you - amazing! Many will say you receive the Spirit when you first believe, but scripture shows accounts where this isn't so (Acts 8:14-17, Acts 19:2-6).
Salvation and the baptism of the Holy Spirit came to me as two separate moments. Shortly after I had felt the joy of His salvation, some people gathered around me and laid their hands on me. Suddenly, it felt like the ceiling was opened and God was pouring through and filling my inner being. The feeling was that of intense love, joy and peace of which I've never felt before or since. It was so intense I had to ask for it to stop as I didn't think I could handle any more. I hadn't read the Bible or heard of the Holy Spirit or what happened in Acts but surely this was His baptism of the Holy Spirit (Acts 8:14-17). He said He will make His abode with us (John 14:23). Now in us, the Spirit bears its fruit in our lives and gives gifts to perfect and build the body (Romans 12, 1 Corinthians 12, Ephesians 4).
A relationship with the King of Kings
As I reflect on my salvation, an awe comes over me as I rejoice in my freedom. I more fully grasp the captivity that the world is under and of which I was once held captive. Moreover, I understand how the ruler who held me in bondage no longer has a hold on me (Romans 8:2). The Israelites crossing of the Red Sea and the drowning of Pharaoh offers an illustration to us of our death and new birth - of what genuinely happens when we are saved. The Lord saves us from the enemy and our former bonds (Luke 4:18-19). That is truly good news!
For many, an initial salvation moment is all there is to salvation. Having a salvation moment is what many people look to when they try to determine if someone is saved. Did you have a salvation moment? If yours wasn't moving or dramatic, does that mean you aren't saved? If you weren't baptized by a church official, are you not saved? For young people who were raised in the church, most can't recall if they ever had a salvation moment. Some were baptized or christened as infants. Some remember always believing because their parents believed. This is how the Israelites were saved as well. Some were young children, some even within the womb of their mothers. Others witnessed the miracles and chose to believe in God and follow Moses. But indeed, all who believed and left with Moses were saved from Pharaoh and the Egyptians.
Perhaps our error in thinking about salvation is to consider it to only be an initial moment. Salvation is an ongoing relationship with Jesus - an ongoing belief that He is our Lord and Savior. Just as God didn't abandon the Israelites after they passed through the Red Sea, neither does He abandon us. He led them across the wilderness, provided them with water to drink and food to eat. He protected them from serpents and kept their clothing and shoes from wearing out. He overthrew armies and kingdoms and provided them with a new land. He continues to save us as we walk with Him and are sanctified by the Holy Spirit.
An illustration of our initial and ongoing salvation is Jesus' message of the great cost of salvation through His flesh and blood. He tells us that in order to have life we must eat His flesh and drink His blood. He then expands this message four more times but changes the word 'eat' to 'feeds'. 'Feeds' implies a longer, ongoing process of eating. It literally means to gnaw. He says in order to have eternal life we must gnaw on His flesh and drink His blood. And He elaborates on gnawing two more times. The gnawing and the repetition speaks to the ongoing relationship that He is calling us to have with Him.
‘So Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day. For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him. As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever feeds on me, he also will live because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like the bread the fathers ate, and died. Whoever feeds on this bread will live forever."’
John 6:53-58
In wedding parlance, the initial salvation moment is the betrothal, our time of salvation on earth is the preparation for the wedding, and the salvation to eternal life is the wedding ceremony to come.
Our flesh and the Spirit
Despite salvation, our flesh continues on - perishable, natural, earthy but to be raised imperishable (1 Corinthians 15:42-58). It is like grass that withers and whose flower falls off (1 Peter 1:24). The reason why we continue to struggle against sin is because our flesh is evil - its members serve the law of sin (Romans 7:14-25). It remembers what it enjoyed in Egypt and urges us to go back (Numbers 11:4-6). It is never satisfied and it asks for more (Ephesians 2:3).
The Spirit, though, helps our weaknesses, intercedes for us and searches our hearts (Romans 8:26-27). He teaches us all things and brings remembrance of what Jesus says (John 14:26). He sets Himself against the flesh so that you don't do what your flesh desires (Galatians 5:16-17). He empowers us to fulfill the work of the Savior and to perform 'greater works than these' (John 14:12). He distributes His gifts among the believers to build up each other as one body and to make it a holy and pure Bride (Revelation 19:7-8).
Jesus became flesh and lived among men (John 1:14). He emptied Himself, took on the form of man, and humbled himself, and walked in obedience (Philippians 2:7-8). Like us, He was tempted in all things so that He could sympathize with our weaknesses (Hebrews 4:14-15) and can aid those who are tempted (Hebrews 2:18). To show us the way, the Spirit led Jesus into a wilderness following His baptism. After 40 days, scripture describes the final encounter between Jesus and Satan in the wilderness as Satan came to tempt Him. Jesus resists the temptation from Satan illuminating the path for us all to follow. The Spirit gave Jesus remembrance of the truths He would need to resist the temptation to his flesh. Satan appealed to His hunger, to His trust, and to His will. Jesus resisted the devil and he left Him (Matthew 4:1-11).
God will place us in a wilderness to test us and to see what is in our heart just as He did with Jesus and the Israelites (1 Peter 4:12-13). We shouldn't look at the testing as though God is waiting for us to fail. He promises we will not be tested beyond what we are able to handle (1 Corinthians 10:13). He allows trials in our lives to produce endurance so we will be perfect and complete (James 1:2-5). The afflictions we face bring comfort and salvation (2 Corinthians 1:5-6). And He refines us like gold - exposing, separating and then removing the impurities if we will allow the Spirit to do the work (1 Peter 1:3-9). As we love God, the deeds of the flesh are put to death (Romans 8:13). Our flesh has been crucified with Christ and we now live by faith in the flesh so that Christ lives in us (Galatians 2:20). The result of the ongoing work of the Spirit is sanctification - purification (Romans 6:19-22).
Take heed that you do not fall
Can a believer lose salvation? Paul writes that we have been established in Christ, anointed by God, sealed and given the Spirit as a pledge (2 Corinthians 1:21-22). He further writes that having believed in the gospel of salvation, we are sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit given as a pledge of our inheritance (Ephesians 1:13). These passages seem to imply that you can't - that your salvation is sealed.
But looking back to 1 Corinthians 10, Paul writes, 'For I do not want you to be unaware, brethren, that our fathers were all under the cloud and all passed through the sea; and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea; and all ate the same spiritual food; and all drank the same spiritual drink, for they were drinking from a spiritual rock which followed them; and the rock was Christ. Nevertheless, with most of them God was not well-pleased; for they were laid low in the wilderness.'
Paul then lists moments when many Israelites failed to follow the Lord and were destroyed by Him. And he concludes the section by saying, 'Now these things happened to them as an example, and they were written for our instruction, upon whom the ends of the ages have come. Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed that he does not fall.'
Salvation does not mean that God will keep us from turning back to our flesh. In other words, salvation doesn't remove our free will. We can observe the Israelites to see this - salvation from Egypt did not remove their propensity to sin. Even though they witnessed the powerful hand of God perform miracles, rescue them from captivity, part the Red Sea and destroy their captors, they quickly turned away and practiced idolatry, were immoral, tried the Lord, and grumbled (1 Corinthians 10:7-10). And this is what Paul is pointing out as a warning to us. Likewise, if we love ourselves and serve the flesh, we forsake the Spirit and are in danger of falling away (Hebrews 3:7-19). This is because the flesh can be lured back to the former deeds of sinfulness (Romans 7:14-25). Without the Spirit's help, we are helpless to overcome the flesh (Romans 8:6-8).
The Holy Spirit and His temple
Does this mean that once we are saved, committing a sin will disqualify us from eternal salvation? It is not just any sin that will disqualify us but rather the absence of the Holy Spirit from within us. Jesus spoke of it as blasphemy of the Spirit:
"He who is not with Me is against Me; and he who does not gather with Me scatters. Therefore I say to you, any sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven people, but blasphemy against the Spirit shall not be forgiven. Whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man, it shall be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it shall not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the age to come.”Matthew 12:30-32
Paul speaks about it by telling us that our body is God's temple where the Holy Spirit dwells:
“Do you not know that you are a temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? If any man destroys the temple of God, God will destroy him, for the temple of God is holy, and that is what you are.”1 Corinthians 3:16-17
What is the blasphemy of the Holy Spirit? And how can one destroy the temple of God? Romans 8 perhaps answers this most succinctly:
‘There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God's law; indeed, it cannot. Those who are in the flesh cannot please God. You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you. So then, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, "Abba! Father!" The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.’Romans 8:1-17
Here we see Paul contrast those who walk according to their flesh and those who walk according to the Spirit. You could argue that he is speaking about people who are saved versus unsaved in the first part of this chapter. However, Paul directly says this is for those 'who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit'. He later leads with, 'So then brothers…', showing that this is for the believer. He writes this warning within that context, 'For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live'. Walking according to the flesh results in spiritual death - the loss of the Spirit within us. Without His Spirit, we are no longer in Christ Jesus who covers us from condemnation.
Salvation and the new covenant
So can someone really lose the Holy Spirit since it was given by grace while we were still sinners? Let's remember that salvation is only possible because a new covenant was made by God. Hebrews tells us that a covenant requires a death to be in force and that without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness. The covenant with the Israelites was made through the death and shed blood of bulls and goats and was repeated again and again. But the new covenant was done once for all time. Therefore, it couldn't be just any blood but the blood that came from a perfect sacrifice - Jesus (Hebrews 9:15-22).
It is by grace that we are saved and enter into this covenant. By believing in Jesus and repenting of our sins, we are born spiritually into this new covenant and await the salvation of our souls. Being sealed then is His promise and His assurance of an eternal salvation. He gives the Holy Spirit to be in us as His pledge. But it isn't without cost or obligation (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). A covenant is an agreement in which we become debtors to Him (Romans 8:12). If we receive His grace but continue to walk according to the flesh, we trample underfoot the Son of God, and profane the blood of the covenant by which we were sanctified, and outrage the Spirit of grace (Hebrews 10:29). We repeat the sin of Adam who died spiritually and was cast from His presence. We repeat the sin of the Israelites who were saved and yet fell in the wilderness.
Looking again to the Israelites, we read of them turning away from the Lord, walking according to their flesh, and turning to other gods. We can read their record through the Old Testament to observe their falling away and hear God's displeasure and longing for their devotion. But two moments with the Israelites are telling regarding the loss of His Spirit: the Lord's departure from the tabernacle in Shiloh and His departure from the temple in Jerusalem.
His departure from Shiloh
In Shiloh, Hophni and Phinehas were serving as priests in the Lord's tabernacle. They were the sons of Eli the High Priest. And they were evil (1 Samuel 2:12-36). They did not follow the law concerning the offering of the Lord but would illegally take the best portions of meat including the portions that were dedicated to the Lord for themselves. And they openly slept with women who came to the tabernacle defiling the Lord's name. When the Lord summoned the Philistines for battle against the Israelites, Hophni and Phinehas thought they could bring the Lord's presence into battle to defeat the Philistines. Instead, both Hophni and Phinehas are killed in battle and the Lord allows the Ark of the Covenant to be captured. The Lord forsakes the Israelites and His dwelling in Shiloh. Because of the Lord's departure, Eli, the High Priest, fell over and died upon hearing the news. His son's wife named her child, Ichabod, as she heard the news, delivered the baby and died. Ichabod translated means, 'the glory has departed' (1 Samuel 4). The psalmist recalls the moment:
“When God heard, he was full of wrath, and he utterly rejected Israel. He forsook his dwelling at Shiloh, the tent where he dwelt among mankind, and delivered his power to captivity, his glory to the hand of the foe. He gave his people over to the sword and vented his wrath on his heritage. Fire devoured their young men, and their young women had no marriage song. Their priests fell by the sword, and their widows made no lamentation.”Psalms 78:59-64
His departure from Jerusalem
In the succession of kings in Jerusalem, Manasseh became king and led Israel far from the covenant of the Lord (2 Kings 21). He erected altars to Baal, an Asherah, and altars to the host of heaven and worshiped and served them. He also built altars to the host of heaven and an Asherah in the Lord's temple. He sacrificed his sons and brought fortune telling, omens and necromancers and he shed much innocent blood. Because of his great sin, the Lord says, "And I will forsake the remnant of my heritage and give them into the hand of their enemies, and they shall become a prey and a spoil to all their enemies, because they have done what is evil in my sight and have provoked me to anger, since the day their fathers came out of Egypt, even to this day." (2 Kings 21:15-16). In Ezekiel we read about the departure of the Lord from His temple (Ezekiel 10-11). Later in the book, Ezekiel records:
"Therefore, son of man, speak to the house of Israel and say to them, Thus says the Lord God : In this also your fathers blasphemed me, by dealing treacherously with me. For when I had brought them into the land that I swore to give them, then wherever they saw any high hill or any leafy tree, there they offered their sacrifices and there they presented the provocation of their offering; there they sent up their pleasing aromas, and there they poured out their drink offerings. (I said to them, 'What is the high place to which you go?' So its name is called Bamah to this day.) "Therefore say to the house of Israel, Thus says the Lord God : Will you defile yourselves after the manner of your fathers and go whoring after their detestable things? When you present your gifts and offer up your children in fire, you defile yourselves with all your idols to this day. And shall I be inquired of by you, O house of Israel? As I live, declares the Lord God , I will not be inquired of by you.”Ezekiel 20:27-31
These moments are important to the New Testament believer because they show the Lord departing from His temple when the temple is defiled with other gods and idols and practices that are an abomination to Him.
Zeal for Your house will consume Me
Let's take the example of sexual immorality to understand this. If we are saved, our body has become a temple of the Holy Spirit. When we are sexually immoral, we sin against our own body. Because of the mystery of one flesh in marriage, we become one flesh with those whom we join ourselves to sexually (1 Corinthians 3:12-20). Listen to what is written to the Corinthians:
“Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness? What accord has Christ with Belial? Or what portion does a believer share with an unbeliever? What agreement has the temple of God with idols? For we are the temple of the living God; as God said, "I will make my dwelling among them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Therefore go out from their midst, and be separate from them, says the Lord, and touch no unclean thing; then I will welcome you, and I will be a father to you, and you shall be sons and daughters to me, says the Lord Almighty."2 Corinthians 6:14-18
Notice how Paul, when addressing a relationship between a believer and unbeliever, changes the focus to the spiritual aspect of what this really means. He writes of how this relationship brings the enemy and idols into the Lord's dwelling - His temple. This is what blasphemes the Holy Spirit. This is what destroys His temple. This is the deceitfulness of sin. This is why the enemy so often tries to deceive people to walk away from His truth. Listen to the writer of Hebrews:
“Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says, "Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, on the day of testing in the wilderness, where your fathers put me to the test and saw my works for forty years. Therefore I was provoked with that generation, and said, 'They always go astray in their heart; they have not known my ways.' As I swore in my wrath, 'They shall not enter my rest.'" Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God. But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called "today," that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. For we have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end. As it is said, "Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion." For who were those who heard and yet rebelled? Was it not all those who left Egypt led by Moses? And with whom was he provoked for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness? And to whom did he swear that they would not enter his rest, but to those who were disobedient? So we see that they were unable to enter because of unbelief. Therefore, while the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us fear lest any of you should seem to have failed to reach it. For good news came to us just as to them, but the message they heard did not benefit them, because they were not united by faith with those who listened. For we who have believed enter that rest, as he has said, "As I swore in my wrath, 'They shall not enter my rest,'" although his works were finished from the foundation of the world. For he has somewhere spoken of the seventh day in this way: "And God rested on the seventh day from all his works." And again in this passage he said, "They shall not enter my rest." Since therefore it remains for some to enter it, and those who formerly received the good news failed to enter because of disobedience, again he appoints a certain day, "Today," saying through David so long afterward, in the words already quoted, "Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts." For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken of another day later on. So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God, for whoever has entered God's rest has also rested from his works as God did from his. Let us therefore strive to enter that rest, so that no one may fall by the same sort of disobedience. For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.”Hebrews 3:7-4:13
One may ask, "How many sins do I have to commit before the Holy Spirit leaves?" Or, "What sins are considered an abomination that are a blasphemy of the Holy Spirit?" You are mistaken for even thinking this way! It would be like a married person asking their spouse, "How many times can I have sex with others before you leave me?" Or, "How many hateful things can I do to you before our marriage is destroyed?" No! If we truly love Him, we will seek Him, learn what He loves, and look for ways to serve and honor Him. We will spend time building our relationship with Him. Remember - he gives His Holy Spirit as our Helper.
Salvation by faith
If we truly believe, there will be fruit from His Spirit and a change of course away from the world and from the desires of our flesh. We know we are walking in salvation because the Spirit will bear love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control in us. Furthermore, the Spirit will guide and help us to put to death the works of our flesh - immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these (Galatians 5:17-24).
This means to walk in salvation is to be led by the Spirit within us. As we set aside our own desires to pursue His, we are led to walk according to the Spirit in obedience of faith in word and deed (Romans 15:18). His power provides us everything for life and godliness (2 Peter 1:3). As a result, He bears fruit in us that leads to sanctification (Romans 6:22). Being led by the Spirit proves that our faith is real through our obedience to the Spirit in works (James 2:18-26). Which leads us to faith!
Faith guards our salvation through the power of God (1 Peter 1:3-5). Faith casts off the works of darkness and puts on the armor of light (Romans 13:11). It extinguishes all the flaming arrows of the evil one (Ephesians 5:16). It preserves our souls (Hebrews 10:36). Like Abraham, whose faith was counted to him as righteousness, our faith is counted to us who believe God raised Jesus from the dead and was delivered up for our transgressions and raised for our justification (Romans 4:22-25).

Paul to the Romans
But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it— the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God's righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus. Then what becomes of our boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? By a law of works? No, but by the law of faith. For we hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law. Or is God the God of Jews only? Is he not the God of Gentiles also? Yes, of Gentiles also, since God is one—who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through faith. Do we then overthrow the law by this faith? For the promise to Abraham and his offspring that he would be heir of the world did not come through the law but through the righteousness of faith. For if it is the adherents of the law who are to be the heirs, faith is null and the promise is void. For the law brings wrath, but where there is no law there is no transgression. That is why it depends on faith, in order that the promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed to all his offspring—not only to the adherent of the law but also to the one who shares the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all, as it is written, "I have made you the father of many nations"—in the presence of the God in whom he believed, who gives life to the dead and calls into existence the things that do not exist. In hope he believed against hope, that he should become the father of many nations, as he had been told, "So shall your offspring be." He did not weaken in faith when he considered his own body, which was as good as dead (since he was about a hundred years old), or when he considered the barrenness of Sarah's womb. No unbelief made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised. That is why his faith was "counted to him as righteousness." But the words "it was counted to him" were not written for his sake alone, but for ours also. It will be counted to us who believe in him who raised from the dead Jesus our Lord, who was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification.
Romans 4:13-25
Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us. For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:1-13
But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man's trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many. And the free gift is not like the result of that one man's sin. For the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brought justification. For if, because of one man's trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ. Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men. For as by the one man's disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man's obedience the many will be made righteous. Romans 5:15-21
I am speaking in human terms, because of your natural limitations. For just as you once presented your members as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness leading to sanctification. For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. But what fruit were you getting at that time from the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death. But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 6:19-23
For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, "Abba! Father!" The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.
Romans 8:15-17
But what does it say? "The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart" (that is, the word of faith that we proclaim); because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. For the Scripture says, "Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame." Romans 10:8-13
But if some of the branches were broken off, and you, although a wild olive shoot, were grafted in among the others and now share in the nourishing root of the olive tree, do not be arrogant toward the branches. If you are, remember it is not you who support the root, but the root that supports you. Then you will say, "Branches were broken off so that I might be grafted in." That is true. They were broken off because of their unbelief, but you stand fast through faith. So do not become proud, but fear. For if God did not spare the natural branches, neither will he spare you. Note then the kindness and the severity of God: severity toward those who have fallen, but God's kindness to you, provided you continue in his kindness. Otherwise you too will be cut off. And even they, if they do not continue in their unbelief, will be grafted in, for God has the power to graft them in again. For if you were cut from what is by nature a wild olive tree, and grafted, contrary to nature, into a cultivated olive tree, how much more will these, the natural branches, be grafted back into their own olive tree.
Romans 11:17-24
Paul to the Corinthians
"All things are lawful for me," but not all things are helpful. "All things are lawful for me," but I will not be dominated by anything. "Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food"—and God will destroy both one and the other. The body is not meant for sexual immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. And God raised the Lord and will also raise us up by his power. Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? Never! Or do you not know that he who is joined to a prostitute becomes one body with her? For, as it is written, "The two will become one flesh." But he who is joined to the Lord becomes one spirit with him. Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body. Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. 1 Thessalonians 5:1-11
Let no one deceive you in any way. For that day will not come, unless the rebellion comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction, who opposes and exalts himself against every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, proclaiming himself to be God. Do you not remember that when I was still with you I told you these things? And you know what is restraining him now so that he may be revealed in his time. For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work. Only he who now restrains it will do so until he is out of the way. And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will kill with the breath of his mouth and bring to nothing by the appearance of his coming. The coming of the lawless one is by the activity of Satan with all power and false signs and wonders, and with all wicked deception for those who are perishing, because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. Therefore God sends them a strong delusion, so that they may believe what is false, in order that all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness.
2 Thessalonians 2:3-12

But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.

2 Peter 1:3-11

Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder! Do you want to be shown, you foolish person, that faith apart from works is useless? Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered up his son Isaac on the altar? You see that faith was active along with his works, and faith was completed by his works; and the Scripture was fulfilled that says, "Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness"—and he was called a friend of God. You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone. And in the same way was not also Rahab the prostitute justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out by another way? For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so also faith apart from works is dead.

Hebrews 5:9-10
For it is impossible, in the case of those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, and have shared in the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the age to come, and then have fallen away, to restore them again to repentance, since they are crucifying once again the Son of God to their own harm and holding him up to contempt. For land that has drunk the rain that often falls on it, and produces a crop useful to those for whose sake it is cultivated, receives a blessing from God. But if it bears thorns and thistles, it is worthless and near to being cursed, and its end is to be burned.
Hebrews 6:4-8
For if we go on sinning deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a fearful expectation of judgment, and a fury of fire that will consume the adversaries. Anyone who has set aside the law of Moses dies without mercy on the evidence of two or three witnesses. How much worse punishment, do you think, will be deserved by the one who has trampled underfoot the Son of God, and has profaned the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has outraged the Spirit of grace? For we know him who said, "Vengeance is mine; I will repay." And again, "The Lord will judge his people." It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. But recall the former days when, after you were enlightened, you endured a hard struggle with sufferings, sometimes being publicly exposed to reproach and affliction, and sometimes being partners with those so treated. For you had compassion on those in prison, and you joyfully accepted the plundering of your property, since you knew that you yourselves had a better possession and an abiding one. Therefore do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward. For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God you may receive what is promised. For, "Yet a little while, and the coming one will come and will not delay; but my righteous one shall live by faith, and if he shrinks back, my soul has no pleasure in him." But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who have faith and preserve their souls.
Hebrews 10:26-39

This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.1 John 1:5-10
And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments. Whoever says "I know him" but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him, but whoever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God is perfected. By this we may know that we are in him: whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.

Children, it is the last hour, and as you have heard that antichrist is coming, so now many antichrists have come. Therefore we know that it is the last hour. They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us. But they went out, that it might become plain that they all are not of us. But you have been anointed by the Holy One, and you all have knowledge. I write to you, not because you do not know the truth, but because you know it, and because no lie is of the truth. Who is the liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, he who denies the Father and the Son. No one who denies the Son has the Father. Whoever confesses the Son has the Father also. Let what you heard from the beginning abide in you. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, then you too will abide in the Son and in the Father. And this is the promise that he made to us—eternal life.

Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world. Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness. You know that he appeared in order to take away sins, and in him there is no sin. No one who abides in him keeps on sinning; no one who keeps on sinning has either seen him or known him. Little children, let no one deceive you. Whoever practices righteousness is righteous, as he is righteous. Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil. No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God's seed abides in him; and he cannot keep on sinning, because he has been born of God. By this it is evident who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is the one who does not love his brother.

Watch yourselves, so that you may not lose what we have worked for, but may win a full reward. Everyone who goes on ahead and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God. Whoever abides in the teaching has both the Father and the Son.
2 John 1:8-9

Then the woman fled into the wilderness where she had a place prepared by God, so that there she would be nourished for one thousand two hundred and sixty days. And there was war in heaven, Michael and his angels waging war with the dragon. The dragon and his angels waged war, and they were not strong enough, and there was no longer a place found for them in heaven. And the great dragon was thrown down, the serpent of old who is called the devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him. Then I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, “Now the salvation, and the power, and the kingdom of our God and the authority of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren has been thrown down, he who accuses them before our God day and night. And they overcame him because of the blood of the Lamb and because of the word of their testimony, and they did not love their life even when faced with death. For this reason, rejoice, O heavens and you who dwell in them. Woe to the earth and the sea, because the devil has come down to you, having great wrath, knowing that he has only a short time.” And when the dragon saw that he was thrown down to the earth, he persecuted the woman who gave birth to the male child. But the two wings of the great eagle were given to the woman, so that she could fly into the wilderness to her place, where she was nourished for a time and times and half a time, from the presence of the serpent. And the serpent poured water like a river out of his mouth after the woman, so that he might cause her to be swept away with the flood. But the earth helped the woman, and the earth opened its mouth and drank up the river which the dragon poured out of his mouth. So the dragon was enraged with the woman, and went off to make war with the rest of her children, who keep the commandments of God and hold to the testimony of Jesus.
Revelation 12
Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, holding the key of the abyss and a great chain in his hand. And he laid hold of the dragon, the serpent of old, who is the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years; and he threw him into the abyss, and shut it and sealed it over him, so that he would not deceive the nations any longer, until the thousand years were completed; after these things he must be released for a short time. Then I saw thrones, and they sat on them, and judgment was given to them. And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded because of their testimony of Jesus and because of the word of God, and those who had not worshiped the beast or his image, and had not received the mark on their forehead and on their hand; and they came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years. The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were completed. This is the first resurrection. Blessed and holy is the one who has a part in the first resurrection; over these the second death has no power, but they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with Him for a thousand years. When the thousand years are completed, Satan will be released from his prison, and will come out to deceive the nations which are in the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together for the war; the number of them is like the sand of the seashore. And they came up on the broad plain of the earth and surrounded the camp of the saints and the beloved city, and fire came down from heaven and devoured them. And the devil who deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are also; and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever. Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat upon it, from whose presence earth and heaven fled away, and no place was found for them. And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and books were opened; and another book was opened, which is the book of life; and the dead were judged from the things which were written in the books, according to their deeds. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead which were in them; and they were judged, every one of them according to their deeds. Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

Now I want to remind you, although you once fully knew it, that Jesus, who saved a people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed those who did not believe. And the angels who did not stay within their own position of authority, but left their proper dwelling, he has kept in eternal chains under gloomy darkness until the judgment of the great day— just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding cities, which likewise indulged in sexual immorality and pursued unnatural desire, serve as an example by undergoing a punishment of eternal fire. Yet in like manner these people also, relying on their dreams, defile the flesh, reject authority, and blaspheme the glorious ones. But when the archangel Michael, contending with the devil, was disputing about the body of Moses, he did not presume to pronounce a blasphemous judgment, but said, "The Lord rebuke you." But these people blaspheme all that they do not understand, and they are destroyed by all that they, like unreasoning animals, understand instinctively. Woe to them! For they walked in the way of Cain and abandoned themselves for the sake of gain to Balaam's error and perished in Korah's rebellion. These are hidden reefs at your love feasts, as they feast with you without fear, shepherds feeding themselves; waterless clouds, swept along by winds; fruitless trees in late autumn, twice dead, uprooted; wild waves of the sea, casting up the foam of their own shame; wandering stars, for whom the gloom of utter darkness has been reserved forever.Jude 1:5-13

Matthew 7:21-23

For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? And Jesus said to His disciples, “Truly I say to you, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. Again I say to you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.” When the disciples heard this, they were very astonished and said, “Then who can be saved?” And looking at them Jesus said to them, “With people this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”
Matthew 19:16-26
Jesus said to them, "Have you never read in the Scriptures: "'The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; this was the Lord's doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes'? Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people producing its fruits. And the one who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; and when it falls on anyone, it will crush him."

Go therefore to the main roads and invite to the wedding feast as many as you find.' And those servants went out into the roads and gathered all whom they found, both bad and good. So the wedding hall was filled with guests. "But when the king came in to look at the guests, he saw there a man who had no wedding garment. And he said to him, 'Friend, how did you get in here without a wedding garment?' And he was speechless. Then the king said to the attendants, 'Bind him hand and foot and cast him into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.' For many are called, but few are chosen."
Matthew 22:1-14
"Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and put you to death, and you will be hated by all nations for my name's sake. And then many will fall away and betray one another and hate one another. And many false prophets will arise and lead many astray. And because lawlessness will be increased, the love of many will grow cold. But the one who endures to the end will be saved. And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.
Matthew 24:9-14
For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been from the beginning of the world until now, no, and never will be. And if those days had not been cut short, no human being would be saved. But for the sake of the elect those days will be cut short. Then if anyone says to you, 'Look, here is the Christ!' or 'There he is!' do not believe it. For false christs and false prophets will arise and perform great signs and wonders, so as to lead astray, if possible, even the elect. See, I have told you beforehand. So, if they say to you, 'Look, he is in the wilderness,' do not go out. If they say, 'Look, he is in the inner rooms,' do not believe it. For as the lightning comes from the east and shines as far as the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. Wherever the corpse is, there the vultures will gather.

Blessed is that servant whom his master will find so doing when he comes. Truly, I say to you, he will set him over all his possessions. Afterward the other virgins came also, saying, 'Lord, Lord, open to us.' But he answered, 'Truly, I say to you, I do not know you.' Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour.

Then you ought to have invested my money with the bankers, and at my coming I should have received what was my own with interest. But from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. And cast the worthless servant into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.'

And people will come from east and west, and from north and south, and recline at table in the kingdom of God. And behold, some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last."
Luke 13:23-30
"If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple. For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it? Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, saying, 'This man began to build and was not able to finish.' Or what king, going out to encounter another king in war, will not sit down first and deliberate whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand? And if not, while the other is yet a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks for terms of peace. So therefore, any one of you who does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple. "Salt is good, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is of no use either for the soil or for the manure pile. It is thrown away. He who has ears to hear, let him hear."

And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, "Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, for I must stay at your house today." So he hurried and came down and received him joyfully. And when they saw it, they all grumbled, "He has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner." And Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, "Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor. And if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I restore it fourfold." And Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, since he also is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost."
Luke 19:5-10
He said therefore, "A nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom and then return. Calling ten of his servants, he gave them ten minas, and said to them, 'Engage in business until I come.' But his citizens hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying, 'We do not want this man to reign over us.' When he returned, having received the kingdom, he ordered these servants to whom he had given the money to be called to him, that he might know what they had gained by doing business. The first came before him, saying, 'Lord, your mina has made ten minas more.' And he said to him, 'Well done, good servant! Because you have been faithful in a very little, you shall have authority over ten cities.' And the second came, saying, 'Lord, your mina has made five minas.' And he said to him, 'And you are to be over five cities.' Then another came, saying, 'Lord, here is your mina, which I kept laid away in a handkerchief; for I was afraid of you, because you are a severe man. You take what you did not deposit, and reap what you did not sow.' He said to him, 'I will condemn you with your own words, you wicked servant! You knew that I was a severe man, taking what I did not deposit and reaping what I did not sow? Why then did you not put my money in the bank, and at my coming I might have collected it with interest?' And he said to those who stood by, 'Take the mina from him, and give it to the one who has the ten minas.' And they said to him, 'Lord, he has ten minas!' 'I tell you that to everyone who has, more will be given, but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. But as for these enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here and slaughter them before me.'"

But the other answered, and rebuking him said, "Do you not even fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? And we indeed are suffering justly, for we are receiving what we deserve for our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong." And he was saying, "Jesus, remember me when You come in Your kingdom!" And He said to him, "Truly I say to you, today you shall be with Me in Paradise."
Luke 23:40-43
Then he said to them, "These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled." Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, and said to them, "Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, and that repentance for the forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things. And behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high."
Luke 24:44-49
"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God."
John 3:16-21
Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst. But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do not believe. John 8:31-32

John 15:1-11

Acts 26:15-18
"'I know your works, your toil and your patient endurance, and how you cannot bear with those who are evil, but have tested those who call themselves apostles and are not, and found them to be false. I know you are enduring patiently and bearing up for my name's sake, and you have not grown weary. But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first. Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent, and do the works you did at first. If not, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place, unless you repent.
Revelation 2:2-5
"'I know your tribulation and your poverty (but you are rich) and the slander of those who say that they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan. Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and for ten days you will have tribulation. Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life.
Revelation 2:9-10
But I have a few things against you: you have some there who hold the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to put a stumbling block before the sons of Israel, so that they might eat food sacrificed to idols and practice sexual immorality. So also you have some who hold the teaching of the Nicolaitans. Therefore repent. If not, I will come to you soon and war against them with the sword of my mouth.
Revelation 2:14-16
"'I know your works, your love and faith and service and patient endurance, and that your latter works exceed the first. But I have this against you, that you tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess and is teaching and seducing my servants to practice sexual immorality and to eat food sacrificed to idols. I gave her time to repent, but she refuses to repent of her sexual immorality. Behold, I will throw her onto a sickbed, and those who commit adultery with her I will throw into great tribulation, unless they repent of her works, and I will strike her children dead. And all the churches will know that I am he who searches mind and heart, and I will give to each of you according to your works.
Revelation 2:19-23
"I know your works. You have the reputation of being alive, but you are dead. Wake up, and strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have not found your works complete in the sight of my God. Remember, then, what you received and heard. Keep it, and repent. If you will not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what hour I will come against you. Yet you have still a few names in Sardis, people who have not soiled their garments, and they will walk with me in white, for they are worthy. The one who conquers will be clothed thus in white garments, and I will never blot his name out of the book of life. I will confess his name before my Father and before his angels.
Revelation 3:1-5
"Behold, I will make those of the synagogue of Satan who say that they are Jews and are not, but lie—behold, I will make them come and bow down before your feet, and they will learn that I have loved you. Because you have kept my word about patient endurance, I will keep you from the hour of trial that is coming on the whole world, to try those who dwell on the earth. I am coming soon. Hold fast what you have, so that no one may seize your crown. The one who conquers, I will make him a pillar in the temple of my God. Never shall he go out of it, and I will write on him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem, which comes down from my God out of heaven, and my own new name.
Revelation 3:9-12
"'I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot. Would that you were either cold or hot! So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth. For you say, I am rich, I have prospered, and I need nothing, not realizing that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked. I counsel you to buy from me gold refined by fire, so that you may be rich, and white garments so that you may clothe yourself and the shame of your nakedness may not be seen, and salve to anoint your eyes, so that you may see. Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline, so be zealous and repent. Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me. The one who conquers, I will grant him to sit with me on my throne, as I also conquered and sat down with my Father on his throne.
Revelation 3:15-21

Now when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and behold, terror and great darkness fell upon him. God said to Abram, “Know for certain that your descendants will be strangers in a land that is not theirs, where they will be enslaved and oppressed four hundred years. But I will also judge the nation whom they will serve, and afterward they will come out with many possessions. As for you, you shall go to your fathers in peace; you will be buried at a good old age. Then in the fourth generation they will return here, for the iniquity of the Amorite is not yet complete.”Genesis 15:12-16
See, I am setting before you today a blessing and a curse: the blessing, if you listen to the commandments of the Lord your God, which I am commanding you today; and the curse, if you do not listen to the commandments of the Lord your God, but turn aside from the way which I am commanding you today, by following other gods which you have not known.
Deuteronomy 11:26-28
"For this commandment that I command you today is not too hard for you, neither is it far off. It is not in heaven, that you should say, 'Who will ascend to heaven for us and bring it to us, that we may hear it and do it?' Neither is it beyond the sea, that you should say, 'Who will go over the sea for us and bring it to us, that we may hear it and do it?' But the word is very near you. It is in your mouth and in your heart, so that you can do it. "See, I have set before you today life and good, death and evil. If you obey the commandments of the Lord your God that I command you today, by loving the Lord your God, by walking in his ways, and by keeping his commandments and his statutes and his rules, then you shall live and multiply, and the Lord your God will bless you in the land that you are entering to take possession of it. But if your heart turns away, and you will not hear, but are drawn away to worship other gods and serve them, I declare to you today, that you shall surely perish. You shall not live long in the land that you are going over the Jordan to enter and possess. I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Therefore choose life, that you and your offspring may live, loving the Lord your God, obeying his voice and holding fast to him, for he is your life and length of days, that you may dwell in the land that the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them."
Deuteronomy 30:11-20
On the next day Moses said to the people, “You yourselves have committed a great sin; and now I am going up to the Lord , perhaps I can make atonement for your sin.” Then Moses returned to the Lord , and said, “Alas, this people has committed a great sin, and they have made a god of gold for themselves. But now, if You will, forgive their sin—and if not, please blot me out from Your book which You have written!” The Lord said to Moses, “Whoever has sinned against Me, I will blot him out of My book. But go now, lead the people where I told you. Behold, My angel shall go before you; nevertheless in the day when I punish, I will punish them for their sin.”Exodus 32:30-34
Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord ? And who shall stand in his holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to what is false and does not swear deceitfully. He will receive blessing from the Lord and righteousness from the God of his salvation.
Psalms 24:3-5
In the sight of their fathers he performed wonders in the land of Egypt, in the fields of Zoan. He divided the sea and let them pass through it, and made the waters stand like a heap. In the daytime he led them with a cloud, and all the night with a fiery light. He split rocks in the wilderness and gave them drink abundantly as from the deep. He made streams come out of the rock and caused waters to flow down like rivers. Yet they sinned still more against him, rebelling against the Most High in the desert. They tested God in their heart by demanding the food they craved. They spoke against God, saying, "Can God spread a table in the wilderness? He struck the rock so that water gushed out and streams overflowed. Can he also give bread or provide meat for his people?" Yet he commanded the skies above and opened the doors of heaven, and he rained down on them manna to eat and gave them the grain of heaven. Man ate of the bread of the angels; he sent them food in abundance. He caused the east wind to blow in the heavens, and by his power he led out the south wind; he rained meat on them like dust, winged birds like the sand of the seas; he let them fall in the midst of their camp, all around their dwellings. And they ate and were well filled, for he gave them what they craved. But before they had satisfied their craving, while the food was still in their mouths, the anger of God rose against them, and he killed the strongest of them and laid low the young men of Israel. In spite of all this, they still sinned; despite his wonders, they did not believe. So he made their days vanish like a breath, and their years in terror. When he killed them, they sought him; they repented and sought God earnestly. They remembered that God was their rock, the Most High God their redeemer. But they flattered him with their mouths; they lied to him with their tongues. Their heart was not steadfast toward him; they were not faithful to his covenant. Yet he, being compassionate, atoned for their iniquity and did not destroy them; he restrained his anger often and did not stir up all his wrath. He remembered that they were but flesh, a wind that passes and comes not again. How often they rebelled against him in the wilderness and grieved him in the desert! They tested God again and again and provoked the Holy One of Israel. They did not remember his power or the day when he redeemed them from the foe, when he performed his signs in Egypt and his marvels in the fields of Zoan. He turned their rivers to blood, so that they could not drink of their streams. He sent among them swarms of flies, which devoured them, and frogs, which destroyed them. He gave their crops to the destroying locust and the fruit of their labor to the locust. He destroyed their vines with hail and their sycamores with frost. He gave over their cattle to the hail and their flocks to thunderbolts. He let loose on them his burning anger, wrath, indignation, and distress, a company of destroying angels. He made a path for his anger; he did not spare them from death, but gave their lives over to the plague. He struck down every firstborn in Egypt, the firstfruits of their strength in the tents of Ham. Then he led out his people like sheep and guided them in the wilderness like a flock. He led them in safety, so that they were not afraid, but the sea overwhelmed their enemies. And he brought them to his holy land, to the mountain which his right hand had won. He drove out nations before them; he apportioned them for a possession and settled the tribes of Israel in their tents. Yet they tested and rebelled against the Most High God and did not keep his testimonies, but turned away and acted treacherously like their fathers; they twisted like a deceitful bow. For they provoked him to anger with their high places; they moved him to jealousy with their idols. When God heard, he was full of wrath, and he utterly rejected Israel. He forsook his dwelling at Shiloh, the tent where he dwelt among mankind, and delivered his power to captivity, his glory to the hand of the foe. He gave his people over to the sword and vented his wrath on his heritage. Fire devoured their young men, and their young women had no marriage song. Their priests fell by the sword, and their widows made no lamentation. Then the Lord awoke as from sleep, like a strong man shouting because of wine. And he put his adversaries to rout; he put them to everlasting shame. He rejected the tent of Joseph; he did not choose the tribe of Ephraim, but he chose the tribe of Judah, Mount Zion, which he loves. He built his sanctuary like the high heavens, like the earth, which he has founded forever.
Psalms 78:12-69
Will you judge them, son of man, will you judge them? Let them know the abominations of their fathers, and say to them, Thus says the Lord God : On the day when I chose Israel, I swore to the offspring of the house of Jacob, making myself known to them in the land of Egypt; I swore to them, saying, I am the Lord your God. On that day I swore to them that I would bring them out of the land of Egypt into a land that I had searched out for them, a land flowing with milk and honey, the most glorious of all lands. And I said to them, 'Cast away the detestable things your eyes feast on, every one of you, and do not defile yourselves with the idols of Egypt; I am the Lord your God.' But they rebelled against me and were not willing to listen to me. None of them cast away the detestable things their eyes feasted on, nor did they forsake the idols of Egypt. "Then I said I would pour out my wrath upon them and spend my anger against them in the midst of the land of Egypt. But I acted for the sake of my name, that it should not be profaned in the sight of the nations among whom they lived, in whose sight I made myself known to them in bringing them out of the land of Egypt. So I led them out of the land of Egypt and brought them into the wilderness. I gave them my statutes and made known to them my rules, by which, if a person does them, he shall live. Moreover, I gave them my Sabbaths, as a sign between me and them, that they might know that I am the Lord who sanctifies them. But the house of Israel rebelled against me in the wilderness. They did not walk in my statutes but rejected my rules, by which, if a person does them, he shall live; and my Sabbaths they greatly profaned. "Then I said I would pour out my wrath upon them in the wilderness, to make a full end of them. But I acted for the sake of my name, that it should not be profaned in the sight of the nations, in whose sight I had brought them out. Moreover, I swore to them in the wilderness that I would not bring them into the land that I had given them, a land flowing with milk and honey, the most glorious of all lands, because they rejected my rules and did not walk in my statutes, and profaned my Sabbaths; for their heart went after their idols. Nevertheless, my eye spared them, and I did not destroy them or make a full end of them in the wilderness. "And I said to their children in the wilderness, 'Do not walk in the statutes of your fathers, nor keep their rules, nor defile yourselves with their idols. I am the Lord your God; walk in my statutes, and be careful to obey my rules, and keep my Sabbaths holy that they may be a sign between me and you, that you may know that I am the Lord your God.' But the children rebelled against me. They did not walk in my statutes and were not careful to obey my rules, by which, if a person does them, he shall live; they profaned my Sabbaths. "Then I said I would pour out my wrath upon them and spend my anger against them in the wilderness. But I withheld my hand and acted for the sake of my name, that it should not be profaned in the sight of the nations, in whose sight I had brought them out. Moreover, I swore to them in the wilderness that I would scatter them among the nations and disperse them through the countries, because they had not obeyed my rules, but had rejected my statutes and profaned my Sabbaths, and their eyes were set on their fathers' idols. Moreover, I gave them statutes that were not good and rules by which they could not have life, and I defiled them through their very gifts in their offering up all their firstborn, that I might devastate them. I did it that they might know that I am the Lord . "Therefore, son of man, speak to the house of Israel and say to them, Thus says the Lord God : In this also your fathers blasphemed me, by dealing treacherously with me. For when I had brought them into the land that I swore to give them, then wherever they saw any high hill or any leafy tree, there they offered their sacrifices and there they presented the provocation of their offering; there they sent up their pleasing aromas, and there they poured out their drink offerings. (I said to them, 'What is the high place to which you go?' So its name is called Bamah to this day.) "Therefore say to the house of Israel, Thus says the Lord God : Will you defile yourselves after the manner of your fathers and go whoring after their detestable things? When you present your gifts and offer up your children in fire, you defile yourselves with all your idols to this day. And shall I be inquired of by you, O house of Israel? As I live, declares the Lord God, I will not be inquired of by you. "What is in your mind shall never happen—the thought, 'Let us be like the nations, like the tribes of the countries, and worship wood and stone.' "As I live, declares the Lord God, surely with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm and with wrath poured out I will be king over you. I will bring you out from the peoples and gather you out of the countries where you are scattered, with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, and with wrath poured out. And I will bring you into the wilderness of the peoples, and there I will enter into judgment with you face to face. As I entered into judgment with your fathers in the wilderness of the land of Egypt, so I will enter into judgment with you, declares the Lord God. I will make you pass under the rod, and I will bring you into the bond of the covenant. I will purge out the rebels from among you, and those who transgress against me. I will bring them out of the land where they sojourn, but they shall not enter the land of Israel. Then you will know that I am the Lord.
